Born in Adams, Massachusetts in the early 1920’s, Adolph Konieczny, the youngest of nine children, began working at a young age. Growing up in small town New England during the depression and WWII, he was a caddy at a golf course, delivery boy, paper mill worker, lead singer in a band and held numerous other jobs. He also loved to snow ski. He and his brothers and friends would race down Thunderbolt Trail on Mt. Greylock all winter long. Then, WWII happened. Adolph was interviewed extensively for a book written about the 10th Mountain Division called “The Boys of Winter; Life and Death in the U.S. Ski Troops During the Second World War” by Charles J. Sanders. Since he was not able to go, Adolph stayed behind working at a paper mill during the day and entertaining as a crooner at night. He married in 1947, to Mildred, and had three daughters. He built a house at the base of Mt. Greylock in Adams for his family in the early 1950’s. Because of his love of skiing, in the late 50’s they opened a ski shop at this home with their good friend Erwin Frank. They spent many happy days skiing and entering ski competitions with their families. Adolph appears in the short film “Purple Mountains Majesty, a History of the Thunderbolt Ski Trail”. He is interviewed along with many of his childhood friends about the start of it all. In the early 60’s he fell while skiing and broke his leg with a compound fracture which put an end to skiing competitively, if at all. Since skiing and the paper mill were his life, he chose to pursue a career in paper and pulp management. They soon moved to Michigan where he began a long career with Simpson Paper Company. Adolph now resides part time in Sun City, Arizona and for the other 6 months or so he travels the country in his conversion van visiting family and friends and making new acquaintances along the way. And yes, he still skis! He is also an avid golfer and loves to sail. This book wanted to come out. He had been thinking about it for a few years and thought it would be interesting perhaps, to write. With the help of his daughters and publisher, Trafford Publishing, his dream has become reality! He is now in the process of writing the second book tentatively titled “Mixed Blood, Too”. |
